According to the Associated General Contractors of America, every state but one, North Dakota, lost construction jobs in October.
“A shockingly large portion of the construction industry’s workforce has simply evaporated,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist for the association.
He added that the national construction unemployment rate of 18.7 percent was the highest of any sector in October and the industry accounted for one-fifth of all job losses in the past year, even though construction only employs one out of 20 workers.
The five biggest percentage losses in construction employment over the year occurred in Nevada (26.9 percent, or 30,200 jobs), Arizona (24.2 percent, or 42,600 jobs), Tennessee (22.3 percent, or 29,300 jobs), Kentucky (20.8 percent, or 17,600 jobs) and Connecticut (19.3 percent or 12,500 jobs).
According to the AGC, locally:
Delaware has lost -11.6% of its construction jobs from one year ago and ranks 16th in the nation for loss of construction jobs.
New Jersey has lost -13.4% of its construction jobs from one year ago and ranks 24th in the nation for loss of construction jobs.
Pennsylvania has lost -10.6% of its construction jobs from one year ago and ranks 13th in the nation for loss of construction jobs.

The Obama administration says the Recovery Act created or saved 640,000 jobs through September but the unemployment rate is still very high through out the nation. In fact, the government reported this week that the national unemployment rate was 10.2 percent for October.
The jobless rate is well above the 9.9 percent that economists expected and breaks the psychological barrier of 10 percent, topping double digits for the first time in 26 years. In all, employers shed 190,000 non-farm jobs last month.

SEPTA’s largest union went on strike this morning, stopping bus, subway and trolley service on all routes.
Transport Workers Local 234, (approx. 5,000 operators and mechanics) walked out of negotiations at midnight on November 2, which according to SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney, they left behind SEPTA’s offer of an 11.5% pay increase over 5 years, an 11% increase in pension contributions by the end of the deal and a $1,250 signing bonus. The contract would be retroactive to March, which is when the union’s contract expired, Maloney said. There would be no pay raise in the first year of the contract SEPTA proposed.
Union workers are seeking an annual 4% wage hike and want to keep the current 1 % contribution they make toward the cost of their health care coverage.
